This area was known for the Civil war. the largest ranch was established here it was called Lachua but it was destroyed by the british. The region was named Alachua from the Seminole tribe who settled in the 1700's. The Timucuan Indian Village had landed in Gainesville, Florida became a part of a spanishland it was given to Don Fernanado de la Maza Arredondo Spanish merchant in 1817. In 1824 Florida was annexed form the United States, The population expanded with planters and farmers. Then there is a Major James B. Bailely who had a cotton plantation. He had 60 acres and he sold it to the city. His house is the oldest house in Gainesville today. They started building it in 1848 it was finish in 1854. When the railroad came Gainesville came into existence. The railroad extended its line from Cedar Keys all they way up to Fernandina Beach.

Gainesville has great places to go check out with the whole family. there is this place called the Devil's Milhopper. this place is beautiful but it's a sinkhole in the middle of the city limits but you go down the stairs its breathtaking with brooks and plants and nice trails to go walking its a beautiful atmosphere. Another beautiful place is Paynes Prairie it has hiking trails as well. this place is paradise for the birders, hikers, campers, and animal lovers. You see all kinds of animals there like deer, wild horses, bison. and a lot of gators. There is this other place called Karlapaha Botanical Gardens. This place is on the out side of the city limits and it is real beautiful too with bamboo forest, herb gardens, and a succulent gardens. these wonderful gardens has a visiting center and a gift shop. Last place is called the Morningside Nature Center. It has beautiful trails and springs it also has a history farm and a place where children can feed the animals. This place is perfect for families.
Gainesville is also perfect for paranormal. If you are someone who is interested in ghosts then you should go to Brenau University its a school for females and its hunted by ghostly shadows that hang around. The teachers and students keep seeing apparitions. If that doesn't scare you then you should go to Chestatee Regional library. After hours the ghosts have a little party and never clean up because they find books on the floor for no reason. The last scary place is the Crybaby Mill. it was a mill long time ago apparently a woman had thrown her baby off the bridge. So when you go up there you can hear a baby crying and yelling.
